President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the attempted coup in the Republic of Niger, saying that “any illegal effort to depose a democratically elected government is not only despicable, but also unacceptable to democratic governments around the world.”
Speaking in a telephone conversation with Mahamadou Issoufou, his counterpart and outgoing president about the situation in the Republic of Niger, President Buhari, according to a statement from his media assistant, Garba Shehu warned that “the international community is hostile to the change of government. by violent and unconstitutional means “.
“It is absolutely naive to attempt the removal of a government elected by force.
“Military political adventurers must respect the will of the people and respect the constitutional order.
“I am particularly concerned about the negative impact of coups on the stability, peace and progress of Africa.
“Nigeria cannot remain indifferent to these dangers for Africa. Coups are out of date and the military’s involvement in violent changes of government is doing more harm than good to Africa, ”said the president.
The Nigerian leader urged African leaders to “stand united against coups in any guise or form,” warning the coup plotters to learn a lesson from history about the consequences of instability caused by the violent takeover of governments.
President Buhari also used the occasion to congratulate President-elect Mohamed Bazoum on his electoral victory and the outgoing President’s commitment to the orderly and peaceful transfer of power.
The Nigerian leader also applauded the Nigerian security forces for suppressing the attack on the democratically elected People’s Government of the Republic of Niger.
